PREMSIE

When a gang of bank robbers get betrayed by the Russian mob and are being forced to do one more job, they see no other chance to succeed without pulling a Triple 9, a police command that signalizes the murder of a cop.

Get ready. This is a super dark Crime thriller. If Heat and Seven had a baby, then this would be the result.

CAST

We have great cast. Just to give you an idea, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Kate Winslet, Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul, Norman Reedus. It’s pretty incredible. I could’t have imagined better actors to start in this type of movie. But did it turn out as incredible as the cast suggests? Yes and no.

TONE

For one, I love the tone of the film. As I said it’s incredibly dark and the action is visceral. Even the colors are toned down to give it this grungy look. Everything feels used and dirty.

But that’s also the problem. It feels so dark that it becomes a problem. There is no levity whatsoever and every character feels like an asshole who beats his wife in the garage and leaves the food out on the floor while getting high on mescaline all day. I mean, even the good guys in the movie feel like that. There is absolutely no levity whatsoever. It even feels a little bland sometimes.

BY THE NUMBERS

The story is a very standard crime story involving all the necessary players. Corrupt cops, Russian mafia and ban robbing bad asses with life issues. We have all seen that before. Nonetheless, if you like these sort of movie, and I myself do very much, you will enjoy it.

MORE ABOUT CAST

Best thing about the film is definitely the cast. Everyone does a great job portraying the scumbag character that he is supposed to play. Especially Kate Winslet is unrecognizable. Omg, she is some bad ass woman. I never thought I would see her portray a mob boss ever! It took me like 30 minutes of the movie to realize that it’s actually her in the film. Damn! Great stuff!

CONCLUSION

As I said. If you like dark crime thrillers, this movie is for you. If you don’t, I don’t think there is enough there to win you over. It’s pretty by the numbers. However, the cast makes it worth to take a closer look.
