What things go wrong and what causes people to split? It’s a movie that showcases the retrospect of how things develop in a fallen marriage. It never comments on the faults. It just shows you what goes wrong.

Ryan Gosling in his breakout role and Michelle Williams, that I honestly have never experienced before, carry the movie from start to finish with their incredible performances. Never has love and marriage been shown on screen that visceral and tragically real.

The categories in the box on the left inside the post do not reflect a score, but the tone of the movie.
A full bar in ACTION does not reflect that the action is amazing, but that there is a maximum amount of action.
The same way an empty bar in SUSPENSE doesn't say the suspense sucks, but rather there is no suspense at all.

AMBITION reflects how willing the moviemakers were in breaking new grounds in terms of subject matter, storytelling and/or technical breakthroughs.

CHALLENGE reflects, if the movie is easy to understand (empty bar) or requires your full amount of brain power (full bar).

When I review a movie I look at a few things. Is it an interesting story, or have I seen it done million times before? Is the script written well or does it confuse the viewer? How are the performances by the actors?

However, since my background is art and design I tend to pay a lot of attention to technical things like the cinematography and overall visual style, which includes visual effects and music (soundtracks and original scores).

Ambition is also very important to me. I can forgive a bad movie, when I see that the filmmakers went for something big - something new and groundbreaking, but maybe didn't quite reach it yet.

But the most important thing is of course. Did I enjoy the movie?

With new movies it's easy. Did I enjoy it when I watched it initially? That doesn't mean my view won't change over time.
When re-watching older movies I grew up with I'm looking, if it holds up, visual-wise and story-wise. But even though I try to keep an objective mind with each re-watch, nostalgia will always factor into my score. After all, I am a human being with a soul ;)
