PREMISE

Star Wars Rebels Season 2 takes place where season 1 left off.

Ezra is now under Kanan’s wing learning the ways of the Jedi. But since Kanan never got to become a Jedi knight, due to the rise of the Empire, his ways of teaching aren’t quite as elaborated.

At the same time our band has been joined by Ashoka, Anakin Skywalker’s former Padawan during the Clone Wars which attracts the attention of one of the Empire’s most menacing figures. Darth Vader!

PACING

Ok, this season is incredibly frustrating. Why? Because, while it has some of the best episodes in Rebels so far with amazing lightsaber fights and many knots to the classic trilogy that fans will adore, it also has incredibly many filler episodes that, quite frankly, will make your eyes roll.

This season consists of 22 episodes which is roughly double the number of the first season’s episode count. But, while the first season really feels like a continues story, this one’s plot flow constantly gets interrupted by some really stupid episodes that really could be left out. I would say around a third of the episodes can be skipped.

The season starts of great with the appearance of Darth Vader. It gives a jump start into what season 2 promises us from the trailer, great drama and character development. It goes on very well for a few episodes. Then it takes a dump and picks up again towards the mid season finale, which is also pretty great. After that it takes another dump and moves along just to pick up again towards the last 3 episodes, which are spectacular.

The pacing is really unfortunate and also irritating because the trailers look great. Only thing is that the trailer basically show us scenes from just 4-5 episodes – the ones which are great. But how about the remaining 15+ ? Well, don’t worry about it, basically saying…

It’s really frustrating!

MUSIC

Another thing I thought became weaker this time around is the music. While the first season used a lot of the classic trilogy’s themes, season 2 seems to have abandoned most of it and gives you more original content, which really isn’t that great. To be honest, it’s really horrible. Sorry Kevin Kiner!

CONCLUSION

I don’t want to talk too much about the plot because it is really good and has a lot of surprises ready for you. So, let’s just say that it has the strengths and the weaknesses of the first season, which you can read the review for it here.

Therefore, if you like the first season you will certainly find enjoyment in the second one because when it’s good, it is really good. But when it’s bad, it’s really bad.

Btw. if you are a fan of Darth Vader, this season will give you some spectacular moments with him on screen. He isn’t in it much, but the few times he is, it’s really worth it.
