Finally, after watching the majority of movies from 2015 I feel comfortable enough to give you my Top 10 list for that year.
Keep in mind, this list does not reflect the best scored, but my favorite movies of 2015. A movie scoring a 10 does not necessary mean it will be #1 on that list. The same way a movie scored lower than 10 can still be #1, if I enjoyed watching it the most.
This list is all about reflection. So, with that out of the way, let’s get started!
Why I love it: Spotlight presents a very gut-wrenching story that absolutely needed to be told. Technically it is a very safe movie, but the stellar performances and the tight script make it a must see for film lovers who just want to invest in an extraordinary story.
Why I love it: This was a total sleeper hit. It’s the Joel Edgerton show in which he proves that you don’t need a huge budget, studio support, nor huge amount of time to deliver one of the best psycho thrillers that I have seen in years. If you are a fan of movies like Se7en and Prisoners, you gonna love The Gift. Check it out!
Why I love it: This movie, as well as Birdman last year, is a technical achievement. Where the pacing may be too slow for some people, guys like me who enjoy the technical aspects of film-making will be blown away. Never has nature looked so crisp on the big screen.
Also, this movie is not for the lighthearted. You feel the brutality of man vs nature in every frame.
Why I love it: Adam McKay has done the impossible. He has made a movie about the 2008 financial crisis that ordinary people can not only follow and understand, but become entertained and ultimately angry at the stupidity of our banks and the people who work there.
If the movie has taught us one thing. Never think that banks work in your interest.
Why I love it: If a movie can make you buy the records of the band it portrays on screen, you know it did everything right. Powerful story and great performances that will help some actors to break into bigger Hollywood. “Fuck the police!”
Why I love it: Quentin Tarantino + Western + Enio Morricone? You better sign me on, boy! If you like classic Tarantino, this is your address to be. Beautifully shot, an engaging plot, witty dialogue and a crazy 3rd act. It’s all here. 100% Tarantino – 100% fun at the movies!
Why I love it: Denise Villeneuve has proven again, why he is becoming one of the fittest directors in Hollywood, when it comes to thrillers. Not only is it a great film, but you start to recognize Villneuve’s fingerprints on a project, when you see it. This super dark border-thriller has again moved him up the ranks in Hollywood and my personal top 10 list of favorite film-directors currently working.
Why I love it: What would be my Top 10 list without a movie representing my favorite genre – Science Fiction? It fulfills all the checkpoints in what makes a sci-fy movie good. Incredible visual style that leaves room to breathe and a smart story that asks questions about existence, society and our own conscience as a human race over artificial intelligence. Must see!
Why I love it: If I had to describe this movie in one word. Mind-blowing! Action movies have taken a deep dive since the emergence of CGI. Lazy film-making and uninspired directors have since taken over the genre. Apparently, it needed an old crazy mind like George Miller hiding away in the desert for six months with a lunatic film-crew, confused actors and 150 stuntmen to bring us the best action movie in decades. This movie is not only an achievement in practical film-making, but it will reinvigorate the action genre for years to come.
Why I love it: While not perfect, it did exactly what it needed to do. First, be a good movie. Second, reinvigorate the franchise and make us excited for Star Wars again. Does it feel familiar? Yes it does? But wasn’t it what we asked for? Yes it was! And if you really think about it, you know that was the only way for Disney to make everybody happy. Now they have done it, they can movie into new territory. Thank you Disney and thank you J. J. Abrams for saving Star Wars!
