2014 was a great year for movies. So, I am looking back and give you my list of my favorite films of that year.
Keep in mind. These are my favorite movies. I don’t rank them according to my score I gave them initially, but which movies I had the most fun watching. A film has to be perfect in order to be special!
Let’s do it!
Why I love it: If the idea of portraying an indy band on jam session vacation isn’t clever enough, integrating the human story of Frank and his mask lifts it up beyond the weird fun of hardcore hipsters dealing with their inner creativity.
Why I love it: The Babadook is the sleeper hit of the season. Not only is it a superb horror film, but great performances by the lead actors and a human story make it work as a dolid drama, too. So when your girlfriend hates horror movies, trick her into telling her it’s a drama film. You didn’t even have to lie
Why I love it: It’s the achievement in cinema of the year. While the story is a great satire on superhero actors wanting to escape their type casting by moving into theatre productions, it really is the technical ambition that make the movie stand out. A movie that has no inner cuts? Is that even possible? With the right cinematographer and a vision of how to use digital effects wisely, yes, it is!
Why I love it: Rarely have I watched an as unsettling movie as this. This movie creates such a jarring atmosphere that you forget its slow pace and patience it takes towards re-telling this incredible true story. My tip: The less information you know about it, the better for you! Try to read the wikipedia article after you watched the film.
Why I love it: This incredible sequel to the highly praised predecessor proves two things. First, an action sequel can always be just as good as the predecessor, if you focus on amping up the right things – story, characters and choreography. Second, Indonesia is the new king of R-rated martial arts cinema. I want a 3rd film. Please give it to me!
Why I love it: David Fincher again shows off with stylish filmmaking complemented by great performances from Ben Affleck and Rosemund Pike and an incredible score wraped into a crazy story. But be warned. Watch it with your girlfriend and it will probably hurt your relationship more than help 😉
Why I love it: This is the first Wes Anderson movie I have watched. If a single film can instantly make you a fan of a director you know it deserves to be high up on that list. Funniest film of the season.
Why I love it: Brian Singer did it again – a great X-Men movie. After a long slump of bad films, the franchise recovered with First Class and reached new heights because the original director came back to deliver the best movie in the franchise.
Why I love it: The best sports movie that has nothing to do with sports. The fact that the movie does everything right to make it great is one thing. It being such a thrill over a subject that doesn’t seem to be made for it in the first place, is another. You don’t need to like jazz music to love this film.
Why I love it: Never has Christopher Nolan been more ambitious and never has a movie of his divided the audience more. I think this is a science-fiction masterpiece that will become more appreciated as time goes on. This shows better than anything that a film doesn’t need to be perfect, in order to fascinate. Astronomers and astrophysicists, this is your movie!
