Lawless is the story of the Bondurant brothers, who became famous for making and selling moonshine whiskey (aka bootlegging) in the prohibition era. More precisely, the story focuses on their efforts to fight off a corrupt special deputy and his police force who try to make their cut off of the Bondurants’ profits.
I really like the movie. I don’t get the general critique consensus. I thought the performances by the all-star cast including Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Clarke, Jessica Chastain, Guy Pierce, Dane DeHaan and Mia Wasikowska were all around stellar. Especially Tom Hardy (of course) and Guy Pearce were standouts. Guy Pearce man! Amazing villain! Despicable and full of himself. That’s how a classic villain should be.
The script was pretty good too. The movie started up a little slow, but the longer it went on thee quicker the pace became and violence picked up.
Speaking of violence. If you like your fair portion of gore in your film, here you go. There are some brutal scenes. One involves Forrest Bondurant (Tom Hardy) and my god, I cringed together.
Overall, the movie was pretty awesome. If you like gangster stories you probably gonna like this movie a lot. I’m a sucker for movies set in the prohibition era and I had a lot of fun with the film.
