WARNING! The trailer spoils a lot of the plot. Watch with caution!
Southpaw is a fictional story (if it was real, OMG!!) about a boxer called Billy Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) who is an undefeated champ, rich, has a huge house, a very supportive wife, a smart girl, a good manager, awesome friends and just everything about his life is perfect. However, he has one flaw. He snaps!
I know it’s part of the premise but I won’t mention what happens because what happens is crazy and intense and it fucks up his life big time. But essentially he has to come back from this massive hole he falls into and, man, does it feel good when he does. Or doesn’t he? wink emoticon
Ok, let’s not kid ourselves, this movie is your typical come back story. And from what I have read this movie gets a bad wrap because of it. Because it hits all the notes this kind of boxing movie does.
But let’s get to the meat. We have two big boxing movies this year. Southpaw and Creed.
Creed has a over 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes while Southpaw has a 60%, so barely “fresh”.
So you professional critics out there are praising Creed for feeling just like the original Rocky even to a degree that it’s actually a soft remake of Rocky and on the other hand giving Southpaw shit for exactly the same reasons??
Yeah, go fuck yourself because Southpaw is not only better than Creed, it actually has a lot more to say about the human spirit and the will to climb out of a deep hole you have created for yourself.
SOUTHPAW VS. CREED
Creed has great performances, Southpaw has fantastic performances. Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed shines, while Jake Gyllenhaal as Billy hope destroys it. Tessa Thompson as Creeds girlfriend is great, while Rachel McAdams as Hope’s wife is fantastic. Sylvester Stallone and Forrest Whitaker are equally great and the boxing scenes are equally fantastic. I give you that, Creed, that you had this one uncut take boxing fight, so good for you.
But Southpaw had a more fleshed out opponent and it feels more intense and gritty.
Also, Southpaw has a crazy good kid actor in Oona Laurence playing Hope’s daughter.
Anyway, what I am trying to say is that Southpaw is an obviously better movie than Creed. They are both fictional stories and hit the same beats. Only Southpaw hit even more beats!
So why is Creed held in such high regard and Southpaw kind of trashed! Because Creed is a franchise film and Southpaw an original story. That’s why!
Anyway, watch Southpaw and Creed and judge for yourself. In my opinion Southpaw is a really good movie. While I acknowledge that it has all the ingredients we know from boxing film it combines them well and molds into an awesome movie. I have nothing against familiarity, if you do it well. And Southpaw does it, plus has intense performances and a great story.
GYLLENHAAL VS. THE ACADEMY
Why Gyllenhaal didn’t get nominated again, ask God himself because it’s becoming a joke. What does this guy have to do? But we have to be honest with ourselves. If Nightcrawler didn’t get him the Oscar win, not even a nomination, nothing ever will. Sorry Gyllenhaal, but the Academy sucks assholes for a living. Nothing you can do, unless you hand over your ass to them personally. Rant end*
