The Big Short tells the story of four dudes/investors who spotted a flaw in the American housing market and used it to to get rich by betting against it.
In casual words: they have foreseen the economical breakdown in 2008 because of the flawed housing market + incompetent banks and used it to get rich.
This movie drew me in like crazy and that’s even though I don’t understand shit about the housing market or the financial system. And many times during the film I had no idea what the fuck the characters were talking about. In fact, the movie acknowledges that the terms in which investors and bankers communicate are crap and meant to confuse ordinary people in order for you to not give a shit and trust the bankers who are screwing you over. Also, the movie breaks the 4th wall and uses celebrities to explain to the viewer in casual language and practical examples what the hell the protagonists are talking about. It’s really funny and effective and simplifies what otherwise would be to complicated to understand. After all, people enroll to school for that shit.
Even now after watching the film I still don’t know the details of all the terms the film was throwing at me. But I understand the context and what it means for the story, or at least I think I do.
This movie is one of these instances where I was thrown into ice cold water, somehow kept myself above it, came out and still feel freezing and confused. But I still love it. Why? Because it was funny, engaging, the characters were super interesting and it kept me interested to an extend that right now, after I finish writing this review, I will open every source available to me and inform myself about financing and all the crazy stuff related to it I have no clue about. The last time something like that happened was after I came out of Interstellar.
Thank you movie for encouraging me to learn more about the world!
I just have to give Adam McKay a huge compliment for making a movie about financing so much fun to watch. That alone has earned him the Oscar nomination.
It’s also important that he did this movie because it’s outrageous what happened. Banks are full of greedy idiots, but unfortunately it is so hard to judge what they did at that time because it’s so complicated. Nobody went to jail for what they did and that’s the sad thing and it makes me angry.
The Big Short is an important movie which you should watch. Don’t be afraid of the topic because the movie simplifies it for you. It is very fun and engaging with great performances by everyone and a great style overall.
