RELEASED 2015 RUNTIME 124 MIN LANGUAGE ENGLISH DIRECTION DAVID O. RUSSELL SCREENPLAY DAVID O. RUSSELL STARRING JENNIFER LAWRENCE, ROBERT DE NIRO, EDGAR RAMIREZ, DIANE LADD, VIRGINIA MADSEN, ISABELLA ROSSELLINI, BRADLEY COOPER MUSIC WEST DYLAN THORDSON, DAVID CAMPBELL
Joy tells the story of Joy played by Jennifer Lawrence who is trying to fulfill her dream of becoming a product inventor. She has the talent and the will, but also a crazy family full of idiots who keep making her life miserable.
If you have watched David O’Russels previous movies, especially Silverlinings Playbook, you know exactly what you are getting. You basically take the same ingredients, actors and such, put them into a different story and you have Joy. Note, that’s not meant as a criticism, it’s just an observation.
In fact, I thought the movie was pretty good. It’s a comedy drama full of crazy family matters and a protagonist who wants to break out and make something out of her life. You know where the movie is going and how it’s gonna end, but the way there is very enjoyable, funny and really touching.
Joy wants to create products that are out of the ordinary and is looking for a way to bring them to life and is looking for a way to launch them onto the market. Because I’m a designer and am also searching for a path to fulfill myself, which I have not found yet, I can relate to that. However, my family is not that crazy.
All the cast is very good and proven in a David O’Russel story. We have Robert DeNiro who plays a lovely idiot dad, his even more idiotic ex wife played by Virginia Madsen, who doesn’t do anything with her life besides watching reruns of her favorite soap opera all day long, Joys ex husband played by Edgar Ramirez, who lives in her basement, but may actually be the most sane of the bunch, and her dad’s Italian new date played by Isabella Rossellini, a rich hard ass business woman, who also is a fool.
Bradley Cooper also is in this film, but he appears late in the movie so I can’t really talk about him without spoiling the plot.
It’s a really nice comedy drama about a person fulfilling her dreams. As I said, you can tell exactly where the movie is going and that’s my only major gripe. Oh, and Jennifer Lawrence is great in the film! I also love the soundtrack.
Btw. Insider: you Americans are crazy with your product telecasts 😛
