SPECTRE again makes a point that the Daniel Craig James Bond movies are soft reboots of the pre-existing series and actually ties his previous 3 films together.

BOND FORMULA

In my opinion Daniel is the best James Bond because he is the closest representation of the Bond character from the novels and because I like my action movies to be gritty and feel real. So, my main complaint with the film may be one that hardcore Bond movie fans will actually think is a good thing.

Whereas Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and Skyfall felt like they are bringing something new into the Bond franchise and re-working some of the bond cliches to modernize the entire lore, SPECTRE seems like drifting back into the “old” bond formula. All the old Bond cliches that have been avoided previously seem to have found their way back into the franchise. We have the non-talking henchman, Bond being smooth sleeping with all the women he comes across, surviving every action scene without rashes, having back his crazy gadgets and a villain who has to explain how awesome and clever he is.

PROBLEMS

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a really fun film and one of the best action films this year, but when comparing it to Casino Royale and Skyfall it falls a little flat. It may be the best looking bond film (the cinematography is gorgeous), but the script has some problems. The love story comes out of nowhere, Monica Bellucci’s character is wasted and Christoph Waltz could have used more screen time. The buildup for his character is just superb! But everything following after that is kinda underwhelming. Also the 3rd act seems a little constructed and disjointed.

CONCLUSION

Overall it is a good Bond film that could have used some streamlining and less of the old Bond formula. Hopefully next time when Daniel Craig will have his last outing as Bond I believe.
