M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN
There was a time when M. Night Shyamalan (aka Shyamalamadingdong) was held as one of the greatest upcoming directors – what am I saying, he was on the TIME cover under the tag line “next Steven Spielberg?”. But that faded off and today studios won’t even let him make a movie anymore because of critical bombs like The Last Airbender, After Earth, Lady in the Water, and a few others. His name won’t even be featured in the trailers to his movies. But as I said, there was a time…
The Sixth Sense is held by most as his greatest achievement and the movie that was responsible for the Shyamalan craze in the late 90’s early 2000’s. So, how was it for someone who watched it for the first time?
Before I tell you, let me say that I already knew the twist (also called the Shyamalan-twists that are a signature of his movies) beforehand.
TWIST (NO SPOILERS)
So how was the movie? It was good. Was it the revelation I expected? No. Why not? Because the movie is almost all about the twist. The problem with twists is, they are fun when you don’t expect them because they will blow your mind. Once you know them, the movie looses a part of its signature and becomes somewhat uninteresting/obsolete.
However, that being said, there is enough in this movie to make it worthwhile even when you know what’s coming. The performances are good, I found the kid to be a little overacting, maybe it’s just me. The suspense is excellent, the imagery is pretty scary at points and the overall atmosphere is dense. It’s pretty slow paced but that’s a plus for this sort of film.
Still, my score may have been higher, but since I knew the twist it didn’t have the impact on me as it should have. But if you don’t know the twist, then watch it now before somebody spoils it for you!
