With this Movie Denise Villeneuve has raised himself into my top 5 favorite directors working today. Anything he touches I will watch. He makes some of the most intense and beautiful movies (also because of his cinematographer of choice, Roger Deakins) in Hollywood which he has proven with Prisoners (2013), Enemy (2013) and now Sicario.
Sicario is a Mexico border thriller about an FBI agent played by Emily Blunt who signs up for a mission to accompany a unit of Delta Forces to make a difference in the effort to destroy the drug cartel in Mexico, especially the one operating in Juarez at the border to El Passo.
Oh boy… Good luck with that!
I don’t want to spoil anything but this movie really shows you in your face how brutal the Mexican drug lords really are. It’s insane to think that this shit is going on behind the US border. I’m not gonna judge, but no wonder the US is so careful with their border protection in the south end. But that’s not the point of the movie. It’s a straight forward thriller, but a mesmerizing one. It takes no excuses!
The performances are all really awesome, especially Benicio Del Torro. Rarely have I seen such a badass on screen.
But let’s talk about the cinematography by Roger Deakins. This movie looks beautiful! The areal shots are some of the highlights and the way he shoots the build up for the action sequences, man! I want him to shoot my wedding (whenever that might be). His shots paired with the dark score by Johann Johansson make for some really intense sequences looking to be matched.
Anyway, go watch this movie and take a shower afterwards cause you will feel dirty leaving the cinema.
