PREMISE
If you are a fan of Samurai movies and you like hardcore action, this movie is for you. Takashi Miike is known for really violent movies and this one fits in right in line. The story surrounds 13 Samurai (well, not really because it’s 12 plus a hobo/hunter who joins them on the road) who are on a mission to kill a corrupt and violent lord. I am not gonna tell you what particular crime triggers the mission, but let me say, if you have ever watched a movie by Takashi Miike you know it will most likely be something really disgusting!
STYLE
It’s a pretty straight forward revenge flick executed masterfully and reminds of old classic Kurosawa samurai tales. Except of a few pretty bad CGi effects in a particular scene involving bulls, the movie looks beautiful. It’s really grungy as well, but that’s what you want from a movie like this.
CONCLUSION
So, unless you are ignorant and don’t feel like reading subtitles, there is no reason why you shouldn’t give it a try. Foreign cinema is good too, you know!
